Learn harmonica
Just getting started? Here are the core techniques, then some easy tabs to try. Grab a C diatonic harp — it’s the standard starting key. New to reading tabs? See the tab guide and the note chart.
Clean single notes
Before anything else, get one clear note at a time. Pucker your lips into a small “ooo” and aim at a single hole. If you hear two notes, narrow your mouth. Everything else builds on this.
Bending notes
Bending lowers a draw note’s pitch — it’s what gives blues harp its cry. Draw on hole 4, then drop your jaw and move your tongue back as if saying “eee → ooo → aww.” Holes 1–6 draw-bend; start on 4.
Tongue blocking
Cover several holes with your mouth and block all but one with your tongue. It’s the basis for chords, octaves, and slaps. Worth learning early even though puckering is easier at first.
Breathing & tone
Breathe from your belly, not your throat — relaxed air gives a fuller tone and saves the reeds. Play softly; volume comes from good tone, not force.
